shouhei's a deteremined little freshman who just wants to get by in life. he doesn't exactly have the greatest work ethic, going for the bare minimal when it comes to his grade and actually doing something (i.e. if he needs to run at least four laps during gym class then he will only run a full three laps and then really half-ass it coming into the home stretch on his fourth and be done with it). he's kind of all laugh and all play, not having grown out of his childish junior high years. even going into high school, he still isn't taking anything seriously and he might as well be looked down on because he just doesn't try.
but that's not to say that shouhei doesn't invest some energy into his hobbies at all. he finds himself interested in broadcast journalism as well as news anchoring, often going around to his classmates and imitating a news anchor, interviewing (or bothering even, in their perspectives) about what's going on in their lives. shouhei likes to know what people are up to, what're they doing with their lives and he also likes to be informed -- he watches the news every morning before going to school, and he's always busying himself at home by recording fake broadcasts instead of doing his homework (which leads to a great load of procrastination on his end).
he can be a little opinonated as well as stubborn, but if he believes strongly about something or feels strongly about something then he will stand by his own opinion and ideas. it takes some time for him to really look at the big picture and to try understanding both sides of a situation but if you talk to him long enough, and really talk to him in a way a little fifteen year old, pubescent could easily understand, you can get down into his skin and get him on your side. with that, it's probably worth noting that he can be particularly naive in that way.
